An Almost End of Summer Post

We have had a really great summer. I'm not sad to see it come to an end though. Well, sort of sad, but looking forward to change too.  And I should (hopefully) have some child free time to clean and run errands soon. It's funny how much you greatly appreciate those sacred times after you have kids.
In these pictures are a few of our recent summer crafts. The first is something I've always wanted to do. I found these cheap Play Doh molds at the Winners final clearance event- and yay, they were Strawberry Shortcake! So I fulfilled my dreams of making clay dough to make them "permanent." Then we painted with acrylics and I sealed them some kind of sealant. (Well, first I tried puzzle glue/sealer and that was a BAD idea...I was mostly being lazy.)When I was a little girl I had Care Bear Play Doh molds and that is where this dream began. So.
We made glitter globes with spice jars, super glue, and Littlest Pet Shops and Moshlings.  That worked well.
We made "Lava Lamps" with baby oil, food colouring, alka seltzer tablets, and old jars. The kids loved it. It is unlikely I will ever do that craft again. I could write a novel on that, but I will just end it with on my carpet, and that's it. I bought them real Lava lamps the following week. They were so happy.
Reese and her friend made these tissue box covers (Dollarama for those looking) and it took them all day to cover with yarn. That wasn't my plan, but if you ever need to occupy two 8 year olds, this is how. I felt kind of bad for Reese 'cause she is a lefty and I have no left handed scissors so yeah, that takes up time too...

I've been collecting props this past week and found some cool stuff. I've also been making props, which is fun because I love making little hair pieces, but really have little use for them. (I used to make hair clips, but I ended up with a million and my girls never enjoyed them all that much.) These are a few of the little headbands and crowns I made this past week. Reese has already claimed one of the headbands as her own. Ha. (It's the one in her back to school photos.)

Back to School Photos

After dinner tonight we went out and I took some "back to school" pictures of Reese. In just one more week, the kids will be back in school. The lighting was just how I wanted it for these pics so I was pretty happy. I wasn't so happy with the funny crops I had to do on the pics of Dave and Reese, but oops, I didn't notice the huge tissue hanging out of his pocket so yeah, you know...

This week I...

So over the course of a week I picked up my studio lights, made a webpage, and purchased a business license.  So you could say that I've been pretty productive.  Before we went out to dinner tonight, Reese modeled a couple of backdrops and flooring for me.  As much as I love my home, I'm realizing that it is sadly a bit small for a studio set up. (We don't have any extra rooms, not even a dining room. Well, we do have an extra room in the basement, but that won't work.) Anyway, I'm not sure what I'll do about that one.  We did the purple pics last, and by then, the kid clearly had grown bored. Otherwise, it went well!

Oh, My Heart

On Saturday night I crept quietly into my "baby" girl's room with the purpose of retrieving laundry. I love sweet little sleeping faces, freed from the chaos of the day. But it was the little pink suitcase, overflowing at the end of her bed, that squeezed at my heart.  She had packed it herself, during a time when she should have been asleep, ready for Grandma's house the next day. And inside were pieces of her beloved blanket, and the tattered Matilda Jane dress that causes us daily grief because she refuses to where anything else, even when it's dirty. ( It's in the wash now). And the girl loves slip ons. When she gets new shoes she wants us to wash them when she comes back inside so she can where them indoors. And her newest pair are here, curled up beside her as she sleeps.  Talk about melt my heart.

No Children Were Harmed...

I would like to first start this post by defending myself and saying that despite how this last photo looks, no children were harmed during this brief photo session on the monkey bars. This is how that photo came to be...
Zo has become quite the master of the monkey bars and will show off as much as possible. Only this past week though, did she venture into trying our wooden monkey bars.  Before that it was the metal, sliver-risk-free variety at the local parks. After a bit of showing off tonight, her sister decided to get a round in, and then Zoe thought "doubles?" So I said they could meet in the middle, high five, and turn back around. I was pretty sure that wouldn't work out so smoothly though. And I was right. Once they hit the middle, they had no idea how they could manage turning around. But I did save them, right after I snapped this last picture. And despite how traumatized Zoe appeared to be, they did it again...with the same results, of course.

More Summer

I can't believe how fast summer is flying by. In a week and a half I'll be back to my part time job, and in a few weeks the kids will be back at school! Last night I went fabric shopping for my little studio, and for Reese's bedroom. I can't wait to try out these backdrops and see how they'll look.  I have some lighting and a couple other necessities on their way soon.  I may have to bribe my little darlings to be practice models?

Zoe's Fifth Birthday Party, In Pictures

The party went well, although things rarely are as they appear in pictures. ;) Like you wouldn't know that this is cake #2 (or would you? 'cause I think I've mentioned before that cakes and I are like oil and water.) And you wouldn't know that all my outdoor parties games were pretty much axed in exchange for just "playing" inside, but still, it was good. :) I was so very lucky to find this cake pan and that my girls appreciate the "classics," like Rainbow Brite. Happy 5th Birthday, baby girl!
