A Partial Family Pic

Last night Zoe pulled out my tripod to play with and then Reese got this idea that she was going to take pictures of us. She screwed her tiny little camera on it, but I thought It'd be better to let her use mine. The lighting was terrible, but it was all for her amusement anyway. It's funny how you don't realize what you look like until you see pics of yourself. I never have pics of me taken. I realized after seeing these pics that I need a serious hair makeover.
Zoe took the second pic. What Reese does, she needs to try too! Some of her pics involved heads being cut out so Dave had to assist her. ;) I realized looking at this one that I look like a giant, fluffy snowman in the winter from all the layers I wear (or well, I hope it's the layers, anyway!)
Here is a link to a tutorial for a basic origami box. I got the instructions from a book, but it is probably even easier to learn when you "see" it being made.

Origami Boxes

I had some free time to fill last weekend so I made a ton of these basic little origami boxes. I picked the absolute most basic one- with no cutting involved. Some of them were quite "off" because I tried to fold too much paper at once. Still, they are really so simple to make- you don't even need a ruler, which is why I liked making them. It was sort of addictive. I figured they would be handy to toss stuff in- like for craft supplies at my little table.

Hiding From the Paparazzi

Reese and Zoe were playing a game up in Reese's room. I got the door shut on me, with an announcement- "no cameras and no paparazzi!" When they opened they door again they allowed me to take a picture of Raggedy Ann and Andy, but no pictures of them.
Zoe has taken up screaming as a hobby. She screams when she's angry and screams when she is excited. Naturally, I am so delighted by this. Hope this phase ends soon!

Friday Catch Up

I realized I've been slacking on my blog lately. Tonight when Dave went to pick up dinner, Zoe wanted to come along so I figured that would be a perfect time to catch up, but things just never seem to go as planned, right? So my computer just decided to continuously freeze up, which reminded me why blogging can be frustrating at times.
Anyway, over the last few days I was fortunate to have two awesome friends come visit, and I got to do a fair bit of baking because Dave has been home for a few days. Plus Dave is always productive on his holidays so he's been getting lots done around here- like building me shelves, and steam cleaning the carpets (which really needed it!)
We even got to surprise Reese by coming to her school assembly today, and she got an award so that was nice to get to see.

I tried a new cinnamon bun recipe yesterday. They looked good, but tasted BAD. I realized I read the wrong line for the salt quantity. They were really salty. So I had to make them again because I just couldn't leave it at that.

I also made "Kale Chips" this week. I'd heard many women on a local forum raving about them, and since I like weird stuff I figured I'd be good to try it, and I am in love. Wash the Kale and tear it into bite sizes pieces. Sprinkle them with seasoned salt (and olive oil if you like). Then you bake the kale at 350 for 10-15 minutes (until crisp, but not brown). I am all out of Kale now so I am considering going for a run to the grocery store and jogging back with Kale in hand. (What a weirdo, eh?)

Bogs and Donuts and Lunch Punches...

Today has been a great day. Zoe had preschool in the morning, and a program for three year olds at her soon-to-be school in the afternoon. We had two package deliveries (yay!) On Sunday I ordered the three of us girls some Bogs and they arrived today. They will be perfect to finish off the winter and for some Spring time splashing. Reese also got a new toy to test, which occupied our after school time.

I finally got to try Jessica Seinfeld's donut recipe, thanks to my wonderful Avon rep who brought my new mini donut pan by yesterday. (I have been wanting to try that recipe for over a year, but I didn't have a mini donut pan.)

I also picked up some lunch punches this morning. The frog is my favourite.

Dave is on holidays this week, but had to go in today for his managers day away. Lucky for us though, he brought home some extra Subway subs from lunch for our dinner. So all in all, it's been pretty good. :)

In Honour of Family Day...

Of course my girls would get to star in my blog on family day, right? Let's face it, they are the stars pretty much every day, but anyway... Here are a few pics of them throughout the week.
We went to a lunch buffet for family day. The girls love buffets so that was a nice treat. We went to get tickets to Gnomeo and Juliet afterwords, which was sold out so we went back in the evening. We were just a couple minutes late, made worse by the zero parking spaces, and mommy had to sit on the stairs in the aisle. The kids had to sit in the very first row. Dave sat a row behind us and a couple seats down, but I wanted to sit beside the kids. We were going to each sit with a kid, but Reese wanted to sit with Zoe. So that wasn't the best movie experience, but thankfully it was a short movie!

Here is Reese prepping Zoe for some dancing

This pic of Reese eating chicken in her Chef's hat cracks me up.

Reese braided Zoe's hair for dancing, and put approximately one million clips in, it appears.

Photo Edits

Well we all know I like to play with editing software. Last night I was playing with some new stuff so for comparison I used one pic from our Red photo shoot and did several different edits. Here is Reese applying lipstick to Zoe.

Yesterday morning Zoe woke up early. She climbed into my bed to watch t.v. Reese came into the room, and without a word, gave Zoe a hug, and left. That made my day. Zoe ran into the hallway after her and asked where she was going. Reese told her she was going to school by herself. Zoe was all confused and called to me, "Reesey is going to school by herself!" Then Reese explained that Dave takes her to the bus, and then she goes on the bus to school by herself. Then in a cheerful voice she told her she'd be home after school and they could play. It was sweet.
When Reese got off the bus, she proudly shared her new treasure with me. It was a Raggedy Ann doll. She went on and on about it and how she had chosen that from the prize bin over Raggedy Andy because she knew none of the other children would want the boy doll so she could get Raggedy Ann first, and then go back for Raggedy Andy later. It melts my heart that she appreciates these kinds of "classics" so much. The doll had been well loved, and I suggested we wash her. Reese wanted to sort the laundry. While I was trying to tidy up and cook dinner, she and Zoe gathered every basket of dirty clothes in the house, brought them downstairs, and dumped them all over the living room floor and couches. You know, prepping to sort, right? I freaked. All I could see was all this mess all over the living room that surely I would be stuck cleaning up. It's funny how almost immediately after a major overreaction to a simple mess you realize how silly it is and it's just stuff that can be picked up, and live goes on. Sometimes it's important to reflect and write this stuff down so you can look back and realize what is really important and to me that's stuff like goodbye morning hugs to your sister, and seeking joy in a simple, old doll.
Reese was really pleased last night because she finished reading another chapter book and today she should have enough "tickets" for Andy. :)

Here is Zoe playing in the puddles yesterday. It's even warmer today. It feels like Spring. I'll take it, even though it's only supposed to be like this until tomorrow....

I Heart Faces- Red

The theme is red for Where Red For Women
I bribed the children with red lipstick. It worked like a charm. They were so excited to get to wear it.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's day wasn't super exciting around here. After 10 Valentine's Days together, Dave doesn't feel the need to "woo" me anymore. What's up with that?! He did get me a card, but the sweetest part was that he also picked cards for each of our girls. The girls had to make a big party set up for dinner. Reese also insisted they tidy up, washed some dishes (?!!! I may keep her home EVERY day!), and we lit a chocolate candle for "atmosphere." We took the girls to Baskin Robbins for dessert. That was about it! Zoe had lots of goodies from preschool and woke up crying for a lollipop today. (Help me).

Zoe got a new tea set for Valentine's Day. I will use any excuse to shower them with gifts. I love buying girl stuff. It's a weakness. They really didn't need another tea set, but I fell in love with this one. This plate is my favourite!
Reese got an electronic piggy bank that counts the coins. She woke me up this morning to ask me to feed it. (Watch out grandparents, she's heading your way!)

Reese came home from school early yesterday. She said she had a stomachache, but it sure didn't seem that way! Either way, she entertained Zoe all afternoon (sweet), and I did some crafting (double sweet). I got some awesome new vintage inspired scrapping paper on the weekend so I used that for some more tin can covering. Sitting underneath that is another project, made from hideous picture frames I found at Winners for 70 cents.

We had more Valentine's Day cards and crafts than we could possibly hang on our art line. The camera pic in the middle is going to be hanging there for a while because it's a favourite, despite its lack of relationship with Valentine's Day. Reese drew that for me for Christmas.

A Weekend Post

We have had a busy weekend so far- a trip to the museum, errands, Valentine's story/craft time at the library, and family game night. We still have a birthday party at McDonald's and a trip to the movies to come.
Dave is still striving for dad of the year- waking up early all weekend with the kids, whipping up Belgium waffles for breakfast, making an emergency syrup run, and cleaning up barf on the carpet. Aside from the middle- of- the- night-red-barf-everywhere-incident, the weekend has been good. And Zoe is back to normal today. The girls had sleepovers at "Zoe's place" for the last two nights, but last night was cut short mid night, for obvious (barfy) reasons. ;)

And some random pics...
My big girl and her "serious" look.

The Birthday Boy

Birthday Boy Dave turned the 38 today. The girls are going through a real "party" stage. They love throwing parties so immediately after school they had to finish cards, get into party gear, prep the table, and clean the house. We celebrated with homemade pizza and cookie cake. Yes, I did cookie cake last year. I don't know why, but I always make it for either Dave's birthday or Valentine's Day, it seems. It was really good. Dave was struggling to keep his eyes open with the flash. Note Reese is attempting to assist him in this pic. The angle looks a bit funny here- like Dave is has a hunchback. He is actually just laying on the floor for some birthday Hello Kitty bingo. ;)

Just some pics for no particular reason at all...

Since I haven't taken any pics today, but I still try to keep up my blog daily, if possible, here are some pics of the girls, from yesterday, last week, etc. There is no really reason for it, except that they are my favourite subjects, of course. It's definitely gotten to that point where I am really itching for Spring, and I'm ready to take my photography outdoors. Hopefully this Spring I will be welcoming a new lens. That won't be happening until May though.

See the brown strip in Reese's eye? Sadly it took me a couple years to notice that! It's usually covered by her eyelid.

Lunch Box Accessories

We are still loving the Planet Boxes. I probably have more fun than the kids do with the little animal shaped cheese and sandwiches and stuff, but they won't be little forever so I think it's best to enjoy these small details while we can. I have been inspired by other Planet Box lovin' mommas to find cute accessories, like these little food fork/picks, dividers, and dip containers. They make me smile with their sweetness. Oh, and sometimes the children do too. ;)

I Heart Faces- Hearts Theme

I wasn't going to enter a pic these week because I just thought I'd take a little break, but I decided I needed to because the theme is Hearts and I love hearts in photography! I don't find this pic particularly spectacular, but I picked it because this heart was just naturally formed in the snow and Zoe picked it up like that, which I thought was pretty neat. I love including hearts in pics, but when they just kind of find their way into the frame- even better!

We made these masks the other day as a quick after school activity. I had forgotten all about these pieces of cardboard I had stashed in a drawer. They were dividers from clementine boxes and as soon as I saw them, with the two little "eye" holes, I thought they'd be perfect to make masks. We used a long, coffee stir stick for the handle. I often find objects and I know they'd be perfect to reuse for a crafts, but sometimes I just can't think of what to do with them. I hate to waste, but I also don't like to save too much in drawers. A cluttered mess of craft supplies has proven to be less than useful at times. One day I wish to have some mad organizational skills, but not today. (<--- I do have quite the procrastination "skills" though.)

Disgusting, but True...

The girls like to play this game. They say "poop me out, daddy!" And Dave pick them up, flings them over his back and they pretend they are a "poop." Get it? As you can see from the pic in the bottom left corner, that is one happy "poop." She's not so happy in the bottom right pic because the poop accidentally bumped her face. But that didn't stop her from wanting to be pooped out again, of course. Yeah, we are kind of weird, I guess.

My Little Princess on her Half Birthday

Zoe turned 3 and a half today. We already had cupcakes for her half birthday celebration because Dave and I stayed up until 12:30 last night baking goodies for his staff. Dave came up with this idea yesterday that he would bake for today's meeting. In the process, which took us over two hours, Dave decided baking is too time consuming and boring. I did think he was a bit crazy when 10 o'clock approached and he hadn't even started baking. He wanted to be able to tell people that he helped bake this stuff, but I imagine the first time might also be the last!
Tonight we hosted our first sleepover- a last minute thing that Reese pitifully suckered me into with her sad little tears. Don't get me wrong. I am not completely opposed to the idea, but I warned her that in the future if she wants a sleepover on a Friday night, she needs to ask me before Friday night, not on the day of after school! So far so good. Just don't wake me in the morning girls... ;)

Making "New" Crayons

We used some old, broken crayons today to make new, shaped crayons. I did these a bit differently this time than the last time we made them (when Reese was little). Last time I just cut the crayons into pieces, and this time I grated them, which made the colours a bit more muddy looking and less distinct. With the smaller, grated pieces I probably didn't need to cook them for as long. I cooked them for 15 minutes at 170. Last time I made them I used mini muffins pans, but this time I tried cookie cutters because I wanted shapes. As suspected, some leaked out, but the shape was still formed and I was able to pop them out after they cooled, and voila!

I think I am just a few votes away from placing in this photo challenge. So if you haven't voted, tonight is the last night. Just scroll down to #486. ;) Thanks to all those who voted for my pic!

I Don't Like You, Valentine

See that joyful look on Reese's face? That's because I "busted" her. As I was taping treats on each of her Valentine's cards, I noticed that one of the girls had one of the cards we'd intended for the boys. I said "do you not like this girl?" with my eyebrows raised in suspicion. Then she went on to explain how this girl always had to be first in line, etc. Then she told me she had given another girl a Disney Princess card (from Zoe's collection of Valentine's). Reese doesn't like the princesses. They are too "babyish" for her. That card was for a "bossy" girl. And then all of the girls she likes got Hannah Montana cards and Camp Rock cards, and her best friend's card was of course most carefully chosen. See, it starts so young, right? But I imagine girls have probably been doing this since the beginning of time. I wonder if boys choose their cards so carefully too?

Here are some more pics from our "framed" photo shoot yesterday. I found these 3D glasses laying around and with their hugeness and all, I thought they'd make for some funny pics. We added in the matting frame for fun.
