Getting Ready for Easter!

Time kind of slipped away from me, and I forgot how fast Easter is approaching. So this morning we decorated Easter eggs, this afternoon we will make Easter cookies, and maybe tonight we will have a chocolate egg hunt.
When I was a child, the Easter bunny always left a trail of chocolate eggs leading to our Easter baskets. One year, when I was about nine, I found my basket in the living room and it had a lovely smelling pink soap inside. Every chocolate in my basket tasted like soap. This was not such a terrible thing though because now I can learn from the mistakes of past Easter bunnies. My girls will be getting a chocolate trail, but will not find any pink soap in their baskets. :)

Some More Spring Sunshine

Before she was even out of bed this morning, I could hear Zoe calling from her room, telling me she wanted to go outside. Lucky for me, being one who doesn't like the cold, it is actually quite beautiful out today. We played outside until Zoe was really muddy (see above photo) and I was hungry for some lunch. I am looking forward to more Spring days like this one.

Attempted Use of Self Timer Function

I decided that if I was to exist in the history of our lives, I would need to use the self timer function on my camera. I have never used it before- which is clear in this first shot. Apparently the self timer was not on...
Maybe if the cat hadn't come into this picture begging me to pet him, it might have been in focus?

Well, at least it's in focus!
See the weird activities I have to resort to when my beloved children are gone?!

My Free Time...

Every time the kids are away I have some regrets that I did not spend my time being productive. I am starting to feel that way even as I post this. I didn't even get out of my pajamas until about 2 o'clock. But I did work on this oil painting, which is going to occupy some wall space in the basement. Dave built this canvas for me when I was in University, and it was a landscape that I never wanted to paint in the first place, but now it gets to be whatever I want. You can still see the textures from the landscape underneath, and I like that effect.

This Event Involved...

Waiting for party guests to arrive!

I wanted to make my own "edible arrangement." This was the first one I've ever made, and I was quite (surprisingly) pleased with how it turned out. The kids loved it and ate every fruit skewer!

Chocolates from the "coin" hunt

Playing "Pin the Fairy on the Flower." She looks so pleased with herself. Note where the actual flower is- up and waaay to the right. ;)

Zoe actually sat at the table and decorated this wand all by herself. I was amazed.

Starting a game of Twister!

Reese's tea pot- now fired in the kiln and in action! I love it.

Enjoying some fruit and tea. Well, only a few kids drank their tea, but that part was mostly for the fun of drinking real tea out of real tea cups. It was decaf though. I didn't want to watch a bunch of kids on caffeine. ;)

This was not exactly what I wanted to do with this pic, but in order to share it on my blog, I needed to edit Reese's friend out of the pic as best as I could. (She is darling, but I do not share others' faces on my blog without prior consent). Her friend wanted to be my helper so she put all the candles in the cake for me. :)

And now I am just about the happiest mama on the planet...

Because Reese asked her Oma if they could go home with her for two nights and Oma agreed to take them!!! Oh bliss. I am sure I will be lost without them tomorrow. ;)

Thanks for viewing my really pic heavy post!

The Disaster that is Every Time I Bake a Cake

It is amazing that my cakes even look somewhat presentable, considering the disasters that occur every time I bake a cake. I will not get into the long stories of some of my cake wrecks, but I will tell you that the cake gods are against me. No matter what I do, all my cakes stick to the pan. Sometimes a little. Sometimes a lot. This time, three quarters came out clean. The other quarter? Stuck in the pan. I was hardly even stressed about that part because I could pretty much predict it, and I'd just have to make do. There was also an incident where the top blew off my cheapie cake decorator, blew icing chunks, and stabbed a hole in the cake. There were many tantrums thrown by me. It only got worse when Zoe wanted to help. Help eat the icing, the is. I wanted to clean the cake tray before taking this photo, but I thought I'd better take one quickly before the whole thing fell on the floor! It hasn't (yet), but I did realize (when I went to put the lid on) that the top peak was hanging over the edge. I wasn't afraid to crush it because there was no way I was moving that thing! Anyway, my sweet, newly six year old said it was the best cake I've ever made. I think she was saying that to make me feel better, and it worked.
Can you believe that last year she suckered me into making TWO cakes for her party?!
That's another story...

Spring Dresses

Dave stayed in Toronto last night because he had a work thing today. I was going to keep Reese home from school, but she really wanted to go.
This morning did not start out well. Actually, it was starting out pretty well, but by the time we got to the car, things started to turn ugly. It was no fault of the children (this time), but little issues like frost all over the car, and no scraper were causing the problems. I ran back in the house to get my Pampered Chef stoneware scraper, and that worked like a charm. But then we had car seat issues. And we never made it to the bus. I decided I really should have kept Reese home today. So I did.
We went to the mall and bought new Spring dresses and accessories, as well as a birthday dress for Reese. Then we went to McDonald's for lunch and play land.
Reese decided she was glad she stayed home after all.

I know you can't really see the dress colours in these edits, but after I looked at the photos, I realized that these bright coloured dresses just didn't look right against the neutral tones of our house.

After photos, Zoe felt she really deserved a cupcake.

Two More Days...

Until Reese turns six! We are counting down to that date, and the party date. Today was a pretty fun day, even though we didn't go anywhere. I baked early birthday cupcakes this morning because on Friday I'll be making the birthday cake. I don't want to do cake stuff for two days in a row. We also planted pumpkins seeds (see pic below). If an actual pumpkin results, and preferably not fully developed in August or September, that will be a miracle. I'm not counting on it though. One time I did grow a pumpkin, but not from seed, and it was beautiful. But it was ready long before Halloween. I am afraid I won't become a pumpkin farmer anytime soon.

Here is Reese playing this afternoon. Can you imagine having so few toys that you have to resort to taking "pictures" of the cat with your mother's yoga mat?
He doesn't actually look amused

I had to take pictures of Zoe before she headed to the park with Dave tonight. She never wears this vest, let alone with the coordinating hat. To go with these pictures, I will share a cute Zoe story from this evening. While she was lying in bed tonight, we were chatting. I told her about how we live in London and she said "and Canadian Tire." I had to tell her that no, we do not live in Canadian Tire, although I know her dad has been visiting there a bit lately...apparently too much. Canada, Canadian Tire, what's the difference, really? ;)

And then my floor looked like this....

Paint Brush Holder

Today I saved this Pringles container from both ugliness and the recycling bin. I decided it would be a good container for storing paint brushes. Looking at this picture, I realize I could have used a spot on the floor that wasn't dirty to take the picture. But first I'd have to find one.

"You've got Plenty"

Reese and her friend are outside making a "garden" in the sandbox, on the deck. I asked her to look up so I could take a picture. I quickly snapped exactly three shots of her looking up when she looked back down saying, "alright, you've got plenty." So I was either forced to make do, or trick her. So I had to trick her, all for the sake of some pics for my blog. She was talking about the cat coming to wreck her garden, and I said "who, that cat behind me?" So she looked up just long enough for me to snap this last pic. That will do for now...

Getting Ready...

Reese's sixth birthday party is just one week away! I am behind on the whole organization process, of course. I wanted to go to Michael's today to get some supplies, but never made it out. Instead Reese decorated the loot bags. I started stuffing them too. So at least we have something sort of done, right?

Friday Photo Play

Today Zoe wore the dragonfly dress that Grandma made for her. Well, she wore it for part of the day anyway. The girl does change a lot!

Thursday, but oh how I wish it was Friday

Some random Thursday shots!

Reese in my hat
Zoe heading outside to play
Here are some random shots of "baby." She finds herself on various tables, apparently. Taking pictures of "baby" sure is a lot easier than those moving subjects.

And a pic of Reese before heading to the movies with a friend. She was excited to wear her new birthday dress from Grandma and Bubba. It looks very sweet on her. Pics of that another day, I'm sure. ;)
